Getting started

How do I talk to Opie?

Hold control and option on your Mac while you talk, and let go when you're done. On Windows, hold the right Ctrl key. The island at the top of the screen shows when Opie is listening, thinking and answering.

Why does Opie ask for so many permissions?

The microphone is for hearing your question. Screen recording is for seeing what you see when you ask. Accessibility is for pointing, and for clicking and typing when you ask Opie to do something for you. You can turn each off in System Settings under Privacy & Security.

Which languages does Opie understand?

Opie understands and answers in English, Norwegian and many other languages. Speak the language you want the answer in.

Can I use my own Claude or ChatGPT subscription?

Yes, and then Opie is free. Choose Claude or ChatGPT when the app asks how you want to use Opie, and it walks you through it.

With Claude, Opie uses your subscription through Claude Code. With ChatGPT, it goes through Codex, and the voice uses your own ElevenLabs key. The limits are your subscription's, and what you ask goes to them under your agreement with them.

Using Opie

What's the difference between Teach me and Do it for me?

In Teach me, Opie shows you one step at a time and waits until you've done it yourself. In Do it for me, Opie clicks and types itself, and reads back what it made before anything is saved or sent.

Can Opie do things without asking me?

Opie only looks at your screen when you ask. Before it saves, sends or deletes anything for you, it reads it back and waits for your yes.

Where do I find my past lessons?

Open Opie from the island at the top of your screen. Your lessons are there, ready to replay, save as a PDF or share. They're only on your Mac.

What is the family helper?

You can invite up to five people from your account and pay for Plus for them. If they agree to share, you see the titles and dates of what they've learned. Screenshots and conversations are never shared, and they can leave the family whenever they like.

Plans

What happens when my questions are used up?

On Plus and Pro, Opie carries on in light mode: a lighter language model answers, and your computer uses its own voice. If that's used up too, Opie pauses until the 1st of next month. Free stops until the 1st. More about pricing.

How do I cancel or change plans?

Go to your account and choose “Manage subscription”. There you can change your card, switch between Plus and Pro, or cancel.

Do I get receipts?

Yes, by email every time you pay. You'll also find them in the billing portal from your account.

Privacy

Does Opie watch my screen all the time?

No. Opie takes a picture of the screen when you hold the key and ask, and sends it with your question to get an answer. Our server keeps neither the picture, the audio nor the answer.

Where are my conversations stored?

Not with us. Lessons and learning memory are on your Mac, and you can delete them in the app. We only keep your account and what your usage cost. Read the privacy policy.

Can my speech stay on my computer?

Yes. Turn on “On-device speech recognition only” in Opie's settings, and your Mac turns your speech into text by itself.

How do I delete my account?

In your account, in the Your data tab. You can download everything we hold about you there first.

When something isn't working

Opie can't hear me

Open System Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone, and check that Opie is on. Also check that the right microphone is chosen in Opie's settings.

Opie can't see what I see

Open System Settings, Privacy & Security, Screen & System Audio Recording (or Screen Recording), and turn Opie on. Restart Opie afterwards.

The app didn't open when I connected it to my account

Check that Opie is in Applications and has been started once. Then start signing in from the app again.
